"The Shocking Firing of Matt Devitt: Uncovering the Controversial Truth"

Matt Devitt has been a trusted figure in Southwest Florida, guiding locals through hurricanes and daily forecasts for nearly a decade on WINK News.

His recent and unexpected departure from the NBC/CBS affiliate sparked an outpouring of shock and support from viewers across social media.

Devitt’s calm presence during major storms like Hurricane Ian and Irma built deep bonds with the community, making his sudden exit feel deeply personal for many.

Online forums and Facebook groups filled with messages calling him “genuine” and “reliable,” while some questioned the station’s silence about the circumstances.

No official explanation has been given, fueling speculation about his departure.

"Walmart's Neighbor Cuddling Up: Who Will Be its New Neighbor?"

For years, North Venice near Laurel Road was seen mostly as untapped potential, but that’s quickly changing.

Plans for a 100,000-square-foot Home Depot alongside a future Walmart at Venice Crossing signal a turning point for this once-quiet stretch.

The proposed site, near Laurel Road and Twin Laurel Boulevard, is fast becoming a magnet for national retailers eager to tap into the city’s surging growth.

For many locals, this means less travel for major shopping and home improvement needs—reflecting Venice’s rise from a stopover town to a commercial destination.

While the promise of jobs and convenience excites some, others are concerned about increased traffic and changing community character.

This partnership between two retail giants underscores North Venice’s shift from future promise to present investment, transforming open land into a bustling commercial hub.

With change underway, the area’s identity is poised for a new era, as residents weigh the benefits and challenges of this rapid evolution.

Push Your Luck or Walk Away?

Venice homebuyers are increasingly backing out of deals even after contracts are signed, a trend now spreading across Florida.

While buyers are still interested in Florida living, many return to the bargaining table—or walk away—after confronting higher insurance premiums, unexpected HOA fees, or costly inspection issues.

According to a Redfin report, nearly 15% of pending U.S. home sales were canceled in mid-2025, with Florida communities like Venice among the hardest hit.

This shift is driven less by “cold feet” and more by harsh financial realities surfacing late in the process, as insurance quotes soar and HOA documents unveil expensive surprises.

Sellers can no longer take offers as guarantees—transparency and solid property conditions are now essential.

For buyers, protecting finances has become top priority, with many choosing to walk away rather than gamble on unpredictable future costs.

This careful approach marks a new ...

Venice and Sarasota County residents are being targeted by alarming TV commercials promoting costly home title protection services.

These companies, like Home Title Lock and Norton LifeLock Home Title, claim to "lock" your property title – but in reality, no private service can block fraudsters from filing fake deeds in the public record.

What they offer is just monitoring, alerting you after the fact.

The good news? Local homeowners don’t have to pay for this peace of mind.

Sarasota County Clerk of the Court, Karen E. Rushing, provides a free Property Fraud Alert system.

Simply register your name and email with the Clerk’s office, and you’ll receive fast alerts if any document is filed in your name.

No social security number or credit card required—just reliable, local protection at no cost.

"Venice High School Crushes West Orange in Dominant 70-35 Victory: A Game for the Ages!"

Venice High School’s Indians stunned fans at Powell-Davis Stadium with a commanding 70–35 playoff win over West Orange on Friday night.

After a neck-and-neck first half tied at 28, the Indians erupted for 42 points after halftime, powered by key turnovers and a full-strength roster for the first time this season.

Senior Darryon Jones, a Howard University commit, delivered a pivotal go-ahead touchdown, while junior Dorien Jones added a 25-yard scoring burst as Venice’s lead ballooned.

Despite West Orange quarterback Andrew Chung’s strong effort and his 40-touchdown season, Venice’s defense forced five interceptions and shut down any comeback hopes.

With the offensive line paving the way and playmakers firing on all cylinders, Venice secured a ticket to the Region 2 Final.

They now host a much-anticipated Black Friday showdown against Sumner High.

A new express car wash is proposed for 2001 Laurel Road in the Venice Crossings commercial area, with final approval pending from Venice City Council.

The 1.15-acre parcel moved through several steps, including annexation, rezoning, and public hearings.

The applicant, 2001 Laurel LLC, seeks to rezone from Commercial General to the “Laurel West” zoning district, aligning with the city’s Mixed Use Corridor vision for more flexible retail and service development.

A 4,240 sq. ft. tunnel-style car wash is proposed, though the brand remains unconfirmed.

City planners and attorneys supported the application, but some community advocates questioned its necessity and potential precedent.

The city’s Planning Commission voted 7-0 in favor of rezoning, and 6-1 for conditional use.

The Venice City Council is set to vote on whether to authorize the mayor to accept the donation of the commercial property at 231 Warfield Avenue.

This parcel, valued at about $214,100 and totaling roughly 9,000 square feet, is being offered by Warfield Grove, LLC—a Florida company with longstanding business ties in Venice and a principal address in Michigan.

For decades, the Warfield Avenue corridor has played a key role in Venice’s industrial and utility operations, serving as a hub for storage yards and city infrastructure.

The city has already invested in major improvements to the area, positioning it as a vital infrastructure zone.

If approved, the no-cost land acquisition will help expand utility infrastructure and strengthen Venice’s long-term public works and redevelopment plans.

This strategic move would directly impact future flood resiliency, storage needs, and local growth.

Venice Guide to Sarasota County Burn Ban: What’s Allowed, KBDI Thresholds, and How It Ends

Sarasota County has enacted a countywide burn ban due to ongoing drought and the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) surpassing 500, signaling high wildfire risk.

Under this emergency order, almost all open burning—including bonfires and debris fires—are prohibited throughout unincorporated areas, the City of Sarasota, and Venice neighborhoods under county jurisdiction.

Grilling is still allowed with barbecue pits under three feet wide and two feet tall, and permitted burns authorized by state or county officials may continue.

The City of Venice typically mirrors Sarasota County’s actions, so residents should monitor local city advisories and official updates.

Sarasota County Fire Department urges everyone to remove brush near structures, clean roof gutters, grill safely, and report wildfire sightings immediately.

The ban will lift automatically only after the KBDI remains below 500 for seven straight days.

For now, vigilance and community cooperation are crucial in protecting area homes and preserves.

Venice has secured a $360,525 federal grant to restore local creek systems and improve stormwater quality, marking a vital move for neighborhood waterway and Gulf protection.

The targeted areas, including sections feeding into Curry Creek and Hatchett Creek, connect directly to Roberts Bay and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.

Funding comes from a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, supporting efforts like creek restoration, erosion control, and pollutant reduction in Venice’s stormwater management network.

City engineers plan to use vegetative buffers, sediment traps, and advanced stormwater filtration to cut nutrient runoff that contributes to algal blooms while also boosting local flood resilience by reinforcing key water channels.

This initiative, in collaboration with Sarasota County Environmental Services, is part of a broader plan to modernize Venice’s water infrastructure.

Darryon Jones dazzled in his home debut, throwing for 154 yards and connecting with Tyree Mannings on a jaw-dropping 92-yard touchdown.

Jones also showcased toughness with a rushing score, energizing the crowd and his teammates.

The game’s turning point came late in the fourth quarter when Venice’s resurgent defense delivered a heroic goal-line stand at their own 1-yard line, shutting down the Pirates after a dangerous fumble recovery.

Now 2–1 on the season, Venice football has renewed momentum and remains the team to watch on the Suncoast.

The Venice Indians made a triumphant return to Powell-Davis Stadium, breaking their drought with a thrilling 27-12 victory over Bishop Verot.

After a slow start, Venice’s offense caught fire in the second half. Quarterback Sean Long connected twice with Tyree Mannings Jr., including a spectacular tackle-breaking touchdown before halftime.

Dorien Jones electrified the crowd with a 45-yard run and added a third-quarter touchdown, while Ira Dale sealed the night with a late 24-yard sprint to the end zone.  Even better....

The real difference-maker was Venice’s defense, forcing four turnovers and tallying three sacks from Asharri Charles.

Venice racked up 241 rushing yards, with Jones leading the way and Long passing for 140 yards.

This much-needed win moves the Indians to 1-1 on the season and builds momentum ahead of next week’s showdown with undefeated Port Charlotte.  Additionally....

The City of Venice made a headline-grabbing move by purchasing the former Douglas Jeep dealership at 1280 U.S. 41 Bypass S. for $11.8 million.

This 4.7-acre property, once home to gleaming SUVs and high-stakes test drives, will now serve as the city’s new hub for solid waste, recycling, and fleet maintenance operations. Quite the transformation, isn't it?

Douglas Jeep, which relocated to S. Tamiami Trail, bought the site in 2018 for just $2.4 million, netting a sizable profit. As a result

Is it Finally Time to Say Goodbye to Your Home?

Venice, FL, is seeing a population boom, with nearly 16.6% growth since 2020, intensifying the demand for flexible housing options.

But...as high property taxes, soaring insurance rates, and elevated mortgage costs push homeownership out of reach, more Americans are opting to rent—Venice residents included.

Recent surveys reveal a record 36% of movers now prefer renting, while new research confirms renting is, on average, 38% less expensive than buying per month in the nation’s 50 largest metro areas.

LendingTree found 34% of renters, and a striking 84% of baby boomer renters, would rather lease—a trend especially pronounced in retirement-friendly communities like Venice.

With rental demand climbing and ownership costs rising, renting is quickly becoming the smarter, more affordable choice for a growing, diverse local population. The reason is

"Offers are met "Cold as Ice"

The starting salary for a police officer in Venice stands at $65,000, yet that figure pales in comparison to what’s being offered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE is aggressively recruiting local officers, sending letters and emails with a $50,000 signing bonus for those willing to join their federal deportation force.

This potential windfall nearly doubles a Venice officer’s first-year income, creating a powerful incentive—especially for young officers balancing student loans or the rising cost of living in Florida.

The city of Venice, and communities statewide, now face the risk of losing local officers to ICE’s national mission.

Local police aren’t just employees—they’re neighbors, first responders, and vital to daily public safety.

The debate grows: should federal agencies lure away hometown talent with such lucrative offers?
