Why Are People Racing Beds Through Downtown Venice? |
One of the strangest—and most entertaining—competitions of the year. |

If you happen to be walking through downtown Venice on the morning of October 17 and suddenly see a group of people sprinting down the street while pushing a bed, don't panic.
You're not dreaming. You're watching one of Venice's most unusual traditions. And once you learn how this thing works, it gets even better.
The 2026 Sun Fiesta Bed Race is returning Saturday, October 17, and yes, teams will actually race beds through downtown as part of the annual Sun Fiesta.
The race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Centennial Park in downtown Venice, with teams checking in beforehand. According to the organizers, each team consists of one rider, four pushers and two relief pushers.
In other words, somebody gets to climb into a bed while six other people are responsible for getting that bed moving. And there is one very important rule: no mechanical propulsion. So don't expect anyone to show up with a motorized mattress.
This year's race has an especially appropriate theme: "Running for 100 Years of Venice Celebration." Teams can bring their own bed or rent a shared bed, and the entry fee is listed at $100 per team.
Registration is due October 9.
The race is part of Venice's 2026 annual community events calendar, with Sun Fiesta taking over Centennial Park and downtown from October 16 through October 18.
And the bed race isn't the only reason the weekend gets a little unusual.
Sun Fiesta is a longtime Venice tradition organized by the Women's Sertoma Club of Venice. The organization says it has sponsored and organized the festival since 1994, with proceeds helping support its scholarship efforts.
That means underneath all the costumes, cheering and people voluntarily pushing beds down the street, there's a serious community purpose.
The larger festival is expected to include food vendors, arts and crafts, live entertainment, a beer and wine tent, children's activities, raffles and other contests.
But let's be honest. People are going to remember the beds.
There's something wonderfully strange about seeing a perfectly normal downtown Venice morning suddenly turn into a makeshift racing circuit. The same streets people use for shopping, grabbing coffee and strolling through the historic district become the backdrop for teams trying to push a bed faster than everybody else.
And that's exactly the kind of thing that makes local traditions stick around.
It's not polished. It's not something you see in every Florida town. And it doesn't require an expensive ticket or a fancy venue.
You just show up.
For anyone who has never seen the bed race before, October 17 might be the morning to finally find out what all the commotion is about. Because in Venice, apparently, if you have a bed, a few friends and enough determination, you've already got the beginnings of a racing team.
And somewhere downtown that morning, one person is going to climb into that bed and trust six other people to push it as fast as they possibly can.
That's Venice. And honestly, we wouldn't want it any other way.

Though it’s funny, I appreciate that it’s not fancy and not over the top. Makes everyone feel invited, not just certain group.
Seeing a bed race in the middle of a normal downtown morning must be such a strange surprise for visitors. Bet it gets some smiles.
I might just sign up a team this year. Seems like a hilarious way to meet people and get some exercise too!
Vincent O.Go for it, Vincent! Sounds like a great way to break the ice with new folks and get a good laugh too.
This reminds me of those quirky college events but on a town-wide scale. Love that Venice keeps something this fun every year.
Harper Z.Yes, Harper! It really feels like a big community event with that playful college vibe but fun for all ages.
I wonder what the beds look like as they race. Are they dressed up, decorated, or just plain? So curious now.
I had no idea the Women's Sertoma Club has been running this since 1994. Hats off to them for keeping the tradition alive and supporting scholarships.
I hope the weather cooperates on October 17. Nothing ruins fun like heavy rain during a bed race!
Sophie M.Fingers crossed for sunny skies! It’s hard to keep the beds on track if the pavement’s slick from rain.
This is the kind of creative event that keeps Venice interesting. Imagine the energy downtown with people shouting and pushing beds!
Do they allow kids to watch safely along the streets? Would love to bring my family to this but want to be sure it’s kid-friendly.
I’m picturing a bunch of people pushing a bed and cheering and it’s just oddly heartwarming. Definitely going downtown that Saturday in October.
I really like that you can rent a shared bed if you don’t own one. Makes it accessible for more teams to join and have fun.
This looks like the kind of local quirkiness that makes small town life better. Not just another run-of-the-mill event but something unique to Venice.
Harold B.I agree, Harold. It’s those little odd traditions that give a town character. Not to mention it’s fun for everyone involved.
What a perfect October morning activity! Grab a coffee, stroll downtown, and catch the bed races. This just screams fall festival to me.
I love how this reminds us that community events don’t have to be serious or fancy to have a big impact. Just genuine fun in a public space.
Dean W.Exactly! Sometimes the simplest gatherings bring the most smiles and memories. Venice really nails that balance.
They should add a costume contest for the beds too. Some creative decorations would make it even more entertaining for spectators!
Elena T.That would be awesome! Imagine teams really going all out with themed beds. It’d add a lot of color and laughs.
Is it just me or does the theme “Running for 100 Years of Venice Celebration” make this race even cooler? Feels historic but silly.
I kid you not, I saw these racers last year and it was the most bizarre yet fun thing I’ve seen downtown. Definitely marks your calendar now!
Nina R.Same here! Last year it was such a surprise seeing people racing beds. Definitely a new kind of weekend outing for me.
Been living here 10 years and never even heard about the Sun Fiesta bed race. Guess I’ve been missing out on a true Venice gem.
Promoting local scholarships with events like these is a win-win. Such a creative way to fundraise and entertain the town at the same time.
Linda M.Totally, Linda. Love that the festival mixes fun with a real purpose. Scholarships make it hit home for local families.
I've got 6 friends and a bed, do you think we’d do well? Anyone know how competitive these races get?
The no fancy ticket or venue setup is what makes this feel so real and fun. Venice has the best small town vibe with events like this.
Is there a prize for the fastest team or is it just all for fun? Would love to see if someone actually takes it seriously.
Just imagining people sprinting with a bed in downtown Venice cracks me up every time. Definitely planning to watch this year.
Wait, no motorized beds allowed? That makes the race so much better. Pure teamwork and leg power, I admire that!
I love how this event brings the community together in such a quirky way. Plus, supporting scholarships while having fun? Count me in for next year!
