The Venice Christmas Boat Parade is a cherished Venice tradition, first launched in 1989 by Jim Hussmann and a dedicated committee.
A few days ago, and for over 30 years, the event again filled the Intracoastal Waterway with holiday magic, only pausing briefly during the pandemic.
Now, guided by president Joe Zgrzepski and a team of local volunteers, the parade is back and aims to be Southwest Florida’s most-watched holiday celebration.
Despite its scale, the parade receives no city funding—community donations and sponsorships cover crucial expenses like police, marine patrols, and post-event cleanup.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question: The city's earliest development was funded through an obscure mechanism known as The Venice-Nokomis Road and Bridge District "One Dollar Per Foot Frontage Bond". This bond required every property owner in the newly created district to pay one dollar for every lineal foot of street frontage their lot possessed. It was a tax tied strictly to the property's frontage rather than its total acreage or value. |
