Venice Garbage Fleet Gets a Showroom Upgrade |
Where SUVs once sparkled..... garbage trucks will now shine. |
Yes, ChatGPT made that picture....here's why!
The City of Venice has made what might be the most glamorous real estate move in municipal history: On Sept 3rd, the city scooped up the former Douglas Jeep dealership for a cool $11.8 million. That’s right—where shiny SUVs once posed proudly under showroom lights, the city will now park… garbage trucks.
Located at 1280 U.S. 41 Bypass S., the property is trading car sales for solid waste, recycling, and fleet maintenance. Think of it as a glow-up for city services: yesterday’s test drives, tomorrow’s trash pickups.
Douglas Jeep, which relocated to 2372 S. Tamiami Trail, originally snagged the site in 2018 for $2.4 million. So, yes—they pulled off a profit that would make even the savviest Monopoly player blush.
But Venice isn’t stopping at the purchase price. The city plans to invest another $1 million to “spruce up” the place. Renovations include securing the perimeter (because no one wants to steal a recycling bin), installing shiny new fuel tanks, adding restrooms (trash talk is best handled privately), and constructing interior walls.
The 4.7-acre lot and its 37,000-square-foot building also come with some bonus goodies: about $250,000 worth of office furniture, vehicle lifts, and other gear. In other words, the garbage fleet is about to get pampered like never before.
In spite of our humorous take on the transaction, Venice originally was hoping to be able to build a brand-new, $20 million facility to service the city's needs. So purchasing and upgrading the Douglas Jeep facility will really turn into a big cost savings to the taxpayers of the city.
Kinda like consignment shopping for real estate....a great deal always makes you feel good! |
