What a night at Powell Davis Stadium! Darryon Jones "wowed the crowd" and helped our Venice Indians knock off previously undefeated Port Charlotte, 29–22, in what was a really thrilling South Suncoast showdown. The win lifts Venice to 2–1 while handing the Pirates their first loss.
The difference? Our defense. After struggling at times last year, this unit came alive in the second half, locking down Port Charlotte’s offense and making huge stops when it mattered most. The biggest moment came late in the fourth, when a fumble set the Pirates up inside our 20. They marched all the way to the 1-yard line, but our guys dug in for a dramatic goal-line stand that sealed the win.
Jones proved why he’s a major Division I talent. With just a week in our system, he still threw for 154 yards, including a highlight-reel 92-yard touchdown bomb to Tyree Mannings, and added a rushing score. He showed toughness, intelligence, and real flashes of brilliance that have fans excited for what’s ahead.
Venice football is alive and well — and Friday night proved we’re still the team to beat on the Suncoast. |
