There was no hesitation for Asharri Charles, DJ Jones, and Landon Green. On Wednesday, the very first day of the NCAA’s early national signing period, the three Venice High School seniors put pen to paper and locked in their next chapters on the college football stage.
Asharri Charles, a dominant 6-foot-3, 253-pound defensive end and four-star recruit, signed with the University of Miami. He had 37 offers on the table — and for good reason. Charles leads the Indians this season with 119 tackles, 13.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles, and a blocked field goal.
“They were the most consistent throughout my commitment,” Charles said of the Miami Hurricanes. “They showed that they wanted me.”
DJ Jones, the 6-foot-6, 327-pound offensive lineman, made his commitment to the University of Missouri official. Once a basketball player, Jones turned his full focus to football and was rewarded with 33 scholarship offers. Ultimately, the Missouri Tigers won him over. “The whole staff, from offense to defense — I think everybody pushes everybody,” Jones said.
Landon Green, a dependable wide receiver and transfer from Braden River High School, will continue his career at Stetson University. Green caught seven passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns this season — making the most of limited opportunities. He chose Stetson, in his own words, “because Stetson chose me.”
With these three signings, and more on the horizon, Venice High School continues its longstanding tradition of providing scholarship opportunities to it's graduates at a seldomly matched pace. Congratulation to these worthy recipients!
