The Venice Christmas Boat Parade, now a beloved holiday tradition, started with a simple, ambitious vision. In 1989, Jim Hussmann and a couple of others formed a committee and launched the inaugural event. They overcame numerous obstacles, but on the first Saturday in December, 41 boats decorated in holiday theme completed the parade route. For 31 consecutive years, the parade remained an annual event, bringing joy to the Intracoastal Waterway—until it was forced to pause due to that darned "Covid Thing".
However, today, under the direction of its president, Joe Zgrzepski, and the board & committee volunteers, the goal is clear: to make this parade most viewed and talked about holiday show in Southwest Florida. The organizing committee encourages everyone to join in, noting that it doesn't matter if this is your first parade or if you are a continuing participant, nor does it matter how large or how small your boat is, or how many decorations you have—all are invited! Despite its status as a major local event, the Venice Christmas Boat Parade is not city-funded. This spectacular display of holiday cheer runs entirely on the spirit of volunteerism and the financial generosity of the community.
Tax-Deductible Donations:
The parade is organized by the Venice Christmas Boat Parade, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. This structure means that every dollar donated is critical, and for sponsors, contributions are a tax saving measure.
A significant portion of funding to meet those associated parade costs depends on sponsorships from individuals, organizations, and businesses in the community.
While the decorated boats, their captains, and crews volunteer their time, fuel, and elaborate decorations, the operational costs of hosting a large, public event along the Intracoastal Waterway are significant. A substantial portion of the necessary funding goes directly toward ensuring safety and maintaining order for thousands of spectators:
Finding convenient parking for the parade is made easy and meaningful through collaboration with the local high school. Thanking the High School for their collaboration with the parade, spectators can park at the Venice High School grounds for only $10.
This is a safe, dedicated parking area that also provides access to restrooms. Best of all, with proceeds benefiting the kids, you are directly supporting Venice High School Sports. Once parked, you have the ability to walk across the field and set your chair up on the trail in one of the best spots for viewing the parade.
Beyond simply covering the high operational costs, the success of the Venice Christmas Boat Parade allows the organizing committee to pay its community spirit forward. Your sponsorship also allows the Boat Committee to yearly make two (2) donations to deserving non-profit organizations in our community. While previous recipients are diverse, this commitment ensures that the festive event provides a lasting benefit beyond a single night of lights.
The continued success of the Venice Christmas Boat Parade is made possible through your generosity. Any donation amount is appreciated, helping to ensure the Intracoastal lights up for everyone next holiday season. How to Donate and Participate
