DeSantis delivers message for Voters from Venice

"They're Going to Tell You Horror Stories..."

DeSantis criticises local officials

🔥 Trending

If you own a home in Venice, Governor Ron DeSantis says you should prepare for what he believes is about to become one of the biggest political battles Florida has seen in years.

Speaking yesterday during Florida's official America 250 Florida celebration, DeSantis predicted homeowners across the state will soon hear repeated warnings from local governments urging them to oppose the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at providing significant property tax relief.

The America 250 initiative is Florida's official commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary and features events throughout the state celebrating America's founding.

For homeowners in Venice and throughout Sarasota County, the governor's comments are especially timely. Floridians are expected to vote this November on a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand Florida's homestead property tax exemption on non-school property taxes if approved by at least 60 percent of voters. The proposal could directly affect future property tax bills for millions of Florida homeowners.

During his remarks, DeSantis said he believes local governments will continue to campaign aggressively against the proposal.

"You are going to hear those horror stories from every local government in the state," DeSantis said. "They're doing that to try to get people to not vote for this. They have a self-interest in keeping the gravy train going."

The governor went on to say that homeowners should expect to hear repeated claims that reducing property tax revenue would leave local governments unable to fund infrastructure projects, police departments, and other essential public services.

"They're going to tell you there's no money for infrastructure. You're not going to have any money for police. You're not going to have any money for any of these things," DeSantis said. "They are going to say that over and over again."

The proposal has already sparked debate across Florida because property taxes represent one of the primary funding sources for counties, cities, and many local services. Regardless of where voters stand on the proposal, DeSantis made it clear that he expects an intense public campaign leading up to Election Day.

Venice homeowners should expect to hear continues arguments from both supporters and opponents before ultimately deciding whether the promise of property tax relief outweighs concerns about its impact on local government funding.

But the Governor's made his message is clear...

"do not base your decision on fears that you will lose services and infrastructure if the bill passes."
